  • Q: Are you only able to attend classes if you are accepted?

    • A: Yes, participation in the PCHW training program is limited to accepted applicants. You must complete the application and interview to be accepted to enroll in the training.

    Q. What are you looking for in applicants?

    • A: We are seeking individuals who are passionate about maternal health and dedicated to serving their communities. To excel in this role, you should have a genuine commitment to both giving and receiving support, and to building meaningful connections with Black women and others in a liberatory way. Stay open to learning and growth, actively participate in all activities, and maintain regular attendance, making up for any missed classes or sessions. Complete all assignments thoroughly and aim to pass both skills and written exams to showcase your dedication and proficiency.

    Q. How much is training, and is there an application fee?

    • A: The training program fee is $5,000 total. There is no application fee.

    Q: Are there scholarships?

    • A: Yes, we have a limited number of scholarships available, and you can apply for them in this training application.

    Q: Do you provide payment arrangements?

    • A: Yes, payment arrangements are available. We understand that financial constraints can be a concern, so we offer flexible options to make the training accessible. A $1,000 non-refundable payment is required even with a scholarship. Please contact us about your personal situation if this is a barrier.

    Q: What time will the classes be held?

    • A: This is a hybrid training, meaning classes will be both virtual (live) via Zoom and in-person.

      Zoom sessions will be held on weekdays (Tues + Thurs) from 6-9 pm.
      In-person sessions are typically held on the last weekend of the month, from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, except for the first weekend. The first 3-day in-person kick-off weekend will be Feb 5-7, 2027. There are additional 3-day weekend sessions. 

    Q: What are the two pathways you can take in the PCHW training?

    • A: Professional Development Pathway: Professional Development focuses on applying newly acquired knowledge to current roles or exploring new career opportunities without MVA support.
      Workforce Development Pathway: This pathway provides opportunities to shadow experienced PCHWs and gain hands-on (on-the-job) experience.

    Q: Can you do the Workforce Development pathway with no experience?

    • A: You can participate in the Workforce Development Pathway without prior experience in maternal health or home visiting. This pathway provides opportunities to shadow experienced PCHWs and gain hands-on experience, with MVA facilitating connections with mentors and offering feedback throughout the training.

    Q: Is there a PCHW certification?

    • A: No, there is currently no community health worker certification available in Washington DC. However, Maryland offers a certification, and completing the PCHW training meets its requirements.

    Q: Where can I apply the skills & experience from this training?

    • A: With this training, you can apply your new skills and experience to careers in public health, such as midwifery, nursing, obstetrics, public policy, law, human services, social work, counseling, or work within other community-based organizations.

    • A: Children older than six months are not permitted. Breastfeeding infants younger than 6 months may be allowed - please inquire in your application. When applying, please indicate if childcare is a barrier for you.
